The Mazda MX5 is one of the most versatile, comfortable and powerful sports cars on the market. For such a compact vehicle, it truly is amazing what the MX5 is capable of. Are you looking for a car that can zip around tight city corners without a second thought? How about a smooth sports car to take you down the coast? The Mazda MX5 is the car for you. The later models are truly spectacular, with carefully crafted interiors that are built to handle the open-roof drives you will inevitably go on. The materials are hardy and durable, while still looking stylish and slick. For a beautiful sports car that drives well and is fun to be in, the MX5 is where it's at.
The car has evolved over the years, having initially burst onto the scene in 1989 and carving up the sports car market due to its affordability and high performance. The car was in such high demand, more and more production orders were initiated - Mazda simply couldn't keep up with the public's desire of the MX5. The car was also released with the option for a hardtop, a feature that true MX5 lovers rejected quite thoroughly. The car, strangely enough, was not initially released as a Mazda, but instead as a Eunos in the Japanese market.
The first generation of the MX5 lasted right up until 1998, and throughout the years was updated and modified in order to maximise the benefits the car could offer. Of course, the chassis barely changed, and it still remains very close to the original design (even in subsequent generations). That first gen MX5 went through several permutations, including various letter designated series' and packages, including the A, B, C and R packages and M Editions. These involved interior upgrades, racing stripe paint jobs, power steering and air-conditioning options. Definitely a broad range of options - this made the car and the model itself incredibly attractive to buyers of all budgets.
Nowadays, the MX5 is a sleek, refined and affordable sports car driven by people of all ages, genders and tastes. 2009 saw a facelift for the MX5, incorporating some newer design elements drawn from other Mazda models. There have also been further refinements to the engine and transmission, with smoother shifting, automatic transmission, improved suspension and more!
While the car may have developed a slightly feminine image over time, modern car enthusiasts and major personalities (including Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson) have recently changed their tune, fully endorsing the MX5.
